NORMAN – The No. 16 Oklahoma men's tennis team swept the opening weekend of Big 12 play, picking up a 4-1 victory over No. 29 Texas Tech Sunday indoors at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
OU improves to 16-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Texas Tech drops to 17-7 and 0-2 in the Big 12.
“This team shows a lot of resiliency,” said head coach Nick Crowell. “We lost the doubles point two days in a row against two really good teams and it kind of showed our depth. I think the one thing about this team is we have a lot of really good players and we're really deep and that's been one of our strengths this season coming out early into the Big 12.”
The Sooners gave up the doubles point for the second straight match, but picked up four singles wins to take the contest.
No. 62 Adrian Oetzbach and Ferran Calvo fell to Texas Tech's Connor Curry and Ilgiz Valiev, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot. OU freshmen Max Stewart and James Davis battled with Matheus Leite and Tommy Mylnikov, but ultimately fell, 6-4.
When play was halted, Alex Bakshi and Jake Van Emburgh were just a game away from closing out the Red Raiders' Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya, leading 5-4.
In singles, No. 85 Bakshi put the Sooners on the board with a dominant, 6-2, 6-1, victory over No. 108 Mylnikov from the No. 1 line. The win was Bakshi's second over a ranked opponent this weekend, as the junior moved to 4-2 against ranked opponents this season.
No. 105 Van Emburgh extended OU's lead to 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Texas Tech's Curry on court three. In the second set, the freshman came back from a 4-2 deficit, winning four straight games to capture the court.
OU's Stefano Tsorotiotis took down Leite, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot. Tsorotiotis powered back from a 3-1 deficit in the first set to take the frame and never looked back for the straight-set victory.
No. 60 Calvo clinched the match on court four with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Texas Tech's Valiev. The junior won the first frame handily and used a late break of serve in the second set to seal the match for the Sooners.
When play was suspended, OU's Oetzbach trailed Sendegeya, 6-3, 5-3. Stewart was locked in at 1-1 in the third set with Texas Tech's Kapshuk. Kapshuk won the first frame, 6-1, before Stewart fired back in the second to win, 6-4, to force a deciding set.
With its win over Texas Tech, OU finishes its regular season home slate with a record of 13-1, with its sole loss in Norman coming to Illinois in January.
The Sooners continue Big 12 play at TCU on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT, followed by a Red River clash at Texas next Sunday at 4 p.m. CT.
