March 16, 2018 | Women's Golf

NORMAN – No. 16 Oklahoma women's golf is in third place after the opening round of the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz. The Sooners are five strokes out of first after shooting a 3-over 291 on Friday at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club.

Ohio State leads the 16-team field with a 286 (-2).

The Sooners led the field with 70 pars on Friday - 12 more than any other team - and will look to convert those opportunities into birdies in the remaining two rounds.

“I really like where the state of our games are,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We need to take advantage of the par 5 and short par 4s and we'll be golden. We are in a good position with two rounds left.”

Four Sooners are in the top 20 of the individual standings, led by junior Julienne Soo. The Australian shot an even-par 72 and is five strokes behind individual leader Nikolette Schroeder of Ohio State (67, -5).

Freshman Kaitlin Milligan and seniors Valerie Tanguay and Hannah Wood all shot a 73 (+1) and are tied for 13th.

Senior Rylee Pedigo led the team with 17 pars on Friday, but a triple bogey on hole No. 6 has her in 29th place with a 75 (+3).

Senior Ana Ruiz, competing as an individual, is tied for 21st after shooting a 2-over 74.

The Sooners tee off the front nine at 11:40 a.m. CT on Saturday for the second of three rounds. Live scoring will be available on BirdieFire.com.
