NORMAN – Oklahoma women's golf is in eighth place after the opening round of Battle at the Beach at the par-71, 6,202-yard Golf Course Club Campestre San Jose in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Sooners shot a 299 (+15) and are just one stroke out of the top four in the 17-team field.

“The conditions on the golf course played totally different than yesterday's practice round,” said OU assistant coach Ryan Sirman. “We need to continue to stress the importance of having a game plan for every condition. Most teams posted high scores today including us, but we are excited for tomorrow to win the day and climb up the board. The team is ready for the challenge.”

Auburn leads the international event with a 287 (+3), but 15 of the 17 schools shot at least 10 over par in the challenging round.

Only three golfers in the field of 92 shot below par, led by Auburn's Kaleigh Telfer at 69 (-2).

Oklahoma was led by senior Julienne Soo and sophomore Kaitlin Milligan, who each shot a 73 (+2) to end the round tied in 12th place.

Freshman Mikhaela Fortuna fired a 76 (+5) and is in 34th place. Freshman Libby Winans carded a 77 (+6) and sophomore Hannah Lee totaled a 78 (+7).

Competing as an individual, sophomore Sydney Youngblood shot a 76 (+5).

The Sooners continue play Saturday for the second round, slated to begin as a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on BirdieFire.com.
