Two Sooners in Finals at Alabama Tournament

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – For the second consecutive weekend, two Sooners qualified for championship matches, with Ferran Calvo and Jake van Emburgh clinching finals berths in their respective brackets at the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall tournament.

“Today was another really tough day for the Sooners. We showed a tremendous amount of grit and toughness,” said head coach Nick Crowell.

Calvo secured a spot in the Crimson draw final when he defeated Mississippi State's Florian Broska, 6-1, 6-2. The junior faces Tulane's Tim Reutzel tomorrow and will look to win back-to-back tournaments, as he was the Midland Invitational champion last weekend.

In the Houndstooth bracket, freshman van Emburgh took down Trevor Foshey of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-4. Van Emburgh will face Alabama's Edson Ortiz tomorrow in the final.

In the Crimson consolation draw, Jochen Bertsch took down Jan Pallares from Memphis, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3. Bertsch plays Florida State's Terrell Whitehurst tomorrow. James Davis fell to Ortiz, 6-2, 7-5, and will take on Foshey in the Houndstooth consolation bracket up next.

At the Fountain Valley Pro Circuit tournament, two Sooners grabbed back-to-back wins. Alex Bakshi cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Joseph Rotheram (USA) before defeating Gustavo De Oliveira Cruz of Brazil, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of the qualifying draw. Adrian Oetzbach knocked off Denmark's Phillip Hjorth, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, in the first round, followed by Antonio Ruiz-Rosales (Mexico), 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.

At the Tiburon Challenger, senior Spencer Papa defeated Emilio Gomez, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5, in the qualifying draw. Papa fought back from a 4-0 deficit in the deciding set to clinch the match. “Papa coming back from 0-4 in the third is a testament to the work he has put in on the court and in his conditioning,” said Crowell.

Papa faces Kaichi Uchida (Japan) in the second round.

“Tomorrow is another big day and another day to improve,” said Crowell of his squad. “The guys look stronger each day and we are excited for tomorrow.”
