TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Oklahoma men's tennis team had a strong showing on the first day of play at the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall Tournament, tallying eight wins. The Sooners dropped just one singles and one doubles match through two rounds as three OU players advanced to the semifinals in their respective singles draws.

“Today was a solid day all around. We were able to compete really hard the whole day and persevered in some very hot and tough conditions,” said head coach Nick Crowell. “We are looking to build momentum tomorrow and make a few adjustments here and there.”

In the Crimson draw, Ferran Calvo continued his unbeaten streak as held on to beat Zhe Zhou of Alabama, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1, in the opening round before topping Florida State's Terrell Whitehurst, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, to conclude day one. Calvo will play Mississippi State's Florian Broska in the semifinal round on Saturday.

Jochen Bertsch defeated Rice's Oscar Janglin, 6-3, 6-3, before suffering a loss to Tim Reutzel of Tulane in a tight second round match, 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5. Bertsch will continue play tomorrow in the consolation portion of the Crimson draw and will play Memphis' Jan Pallares.

In the Houndstooth draw, freshmen James Davis and Jake van Emburgh turned in strong performances for the Sooners, both going undefeated on Friday. Davis rolled past Alabama's Grant Stuckey, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and followed the shutout up with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Terrance Whitehurst from Florida State. Van Emburgh took down Notre Dame's Conor Somers, 6-2, 6-3, and Eric Wagner of Tulane, 6-1, 6-3, on Friday as both Sooners advanced to Saturday's semifinals.

Davis will face Alabama's Edson Ortiz at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, while van Emburgh play Mississippi State's Trevor Foshey.

In doubles play The Sooners picked up a win from Calvo and Davis, who topped Illinois' Budic and Chakravarthi, 8-4. OU's second tandem of Bertsch and van Emburgh fell to Florida State's Whitehurst and Whitehurst, 8-5.
