Sooners Complete Day One at Napa Valley

NORMAN -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team tallied three wins on the opening day of the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, while claiming five victories at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas on Friday.

The Sooners opened the day as Jochen Bertsch defeated Texas A&M's Juan Carlos Aguilar, 6-4, 6-4. Alex Bakshi grabbed his victory at OU, rolling past Cal's Jack Malloy 6-2, 6-4.

OU freshman Jake van Emburgh dropped a tight match to Cal's J.T. Nishimura, 7-5, 7-5, while teammate Stefano Tsortiotis dropped a 7-6 (4), 6-3 decision to Notre Dame's Tristan McCormick.

OU picked up a doubles win as van Emburg/Bakshi won 6-3 over USTA juniors Lee/Han. Bertsch/Tsortiotis battled back and forth with Baylor's Roy Smith/Constantin Frazen, but ultimately fell 6-4.

The Napa Valley Tennis Classic features 24 college players and eight USTA juniors. The format consists of eight groups of four players (three college players and one junior) who will play round-robin, one match per day. The winner of each singles group will play in an eight-person tiebreaker shootout on Sunday.

The Sooners return to action Saturday as day two of singles play begins. Bertsch will take on Baylor's Frantzen, while Tsorotiotis faces USC's Mateusz Smolicki at 12:30 p.m. CT. van Emburgh is matched up with Notre Dame's Guillermo Cabrera and Bakshi will take on USTA junior Aidan Mayo.

At the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, Ferran Calvo and Adrian Oetzbach earned two singles wins Friday to advance to the main draw quarterfinals. Calvo opened the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over UT-Arlington's Mauricio del Rio to earn his first victory as a Sooner. Calvo punched his ticket to the quarterfinals by dropping Texas' John Mee, 6-2, 6-4.

Oetzbach, seeded No. 1 in the singles draw, made quick work of San Diego's Alex Reyna with a 6-2, 6-1 win. The sophomore held off Rice's Mohamed Abdel-Aziz in a three-set match, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) to advance to quarterfinal round.

Freshman James Davis posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over UTSA's Juri Reckow for his first collegiate win. Davis battled tough with UT-Arlington's Guanarteme Nuez in his round of 16 match, but ultimately fell 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).

In doubles, Mason Bridegan and Calvo fell to Utah State's Nakajima/Barajas in match that went distance, falling 7-6 (5) in a tiebreaker.
