NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team is set for a busy opening weekend of action as the Sooners will compete at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic and the Midland Invitational starting Friday.
"We are really excited to kick off the season this weekend," OU head coach Nick Crowell said. "Our guys have been putting in the work and they are ready to start competing hard."
Alex Bakshi, Jochen Bertsch, Jake van Emburg and Stefano Tsorotiotis will represent OU at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, while Mason Bridegan, Ferran Calvo, James Davis and Adrian Oetzbach will compete at the Midlands Invitational.
The Napa Valley Tennis Classic features 24 college players and eight USTA juniors. The format consists of eight groups of four players (three college players and one junior) who will play round-robin, one match per day. The winner of each singles group will play in an eight-person tiebreaker shootout on Sunday.
The Midland Invitational will be played in Midland, Texas, at the Greater Midland Racquet Club, featuring multiple flights of singles and doubles.
"We are looking to establish the way we want to compete and fight this year," Crowell added. "I'm looking for our guys to push through tough moments and find ways to persevere. It will be fun to finally see them in action."
OU returns five players from last year's squad that advanced to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Tournament, including ITA All-American and NCAA doubles champion Spencer Papa. Papa is ranked No. 16 in singles to begin the year as well as No. 20 in doubles, paired with Emburgh.
The Sooners also bring back Bertsch and Oetzbach, who will be competing in their first fall at OU after joining the team last January. Bertsch was 14-7 in dual-match singles play, while Oetzbach posted an 11-8 mark in doubles.
