NORMAN – The No. 24 University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished the opening round of the Mountain View Collegiate Invitational in ninth place. The 13-team tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,227-yard Mountain View Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
The Sooners logged a 299 (+11) in the round. No. 17-ranked Arizona (278; -10) tops the leaderboard followed by New Mexico State currently sitting in second place at 289 (+1). UNLV is in third place at 290 (+2), and Houston 291 (+3) sits in fourth place. Missouri shares fifth place with Kansas State at 292 (+4).
Julienne Soo led the way for the Sooners, firing a 73 (+1) in Friday's round. The sophomore is tied for 17th place out of 75 competitors after carding two birdies on the day.
Valerie Tanguay and Ana Ruiz both shot a 75 (+3) in the opening round and share 36th place. Ruiz joined teammate Soo in also recording two birdies on the day.
Junior Hannah Wood finished round shot at 76 (+4) on the day for a share of 45th place. Classmate Rylee Pedigo shares 50th place at 77 (+5).
"We had a tough day as a whole," said head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We had a great discussion after the round which I believe should be beneficial. As a team, we need to love what we do and sometimes it seems like we put a lot of pressure on ourselves instead of enjoying the process. We have a lot of golf left and need to play for ourselves."
Oklahoma will tee off for the second round of the Mountain View Collegiate Invitational at 8 a.m. CT Saturday in a shotgun start. Live results can be found at BirdieFire.com.
