Back to Back - Harris Wins Player of the Week
February 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
NORMAN – Oklahoma men's tennis senior Andrew Harris earned his second consecutive Big 12 Player of the Week honor after a big win in singles in the Sooners' 5-2 victory over Arkansas over the weekend the conference announced Tuesday.
Harris becomes just the eighth player in Big 12 history to win the award in back-to-back weeks and the first since Mate Zsiga of Baylor did so in 2012.
After the Sooners dropped the doubles point against the Razorbacks, the Melbourne, Australia, native squared off with Mike Redlicki at the No. 1 singles position. Harris took the first set from Redlicki, ranked No. 3 nationally, in a tiebreaker and then cruised to a 6-3 mark in the second to take the straight-sets win. Harris's victory clinched the dual for Oklahoma.
The Sooner senior has been on fire to start the year. Just last weekend he went 4-0 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Oklahoma's wins over No. 19 Michigan and 17th-ranked Illinois, including singles wins over No. 50 Kevin Wong and unranked but highly-touted Aleks Vukic, both in straight sets.
Tuesday's honor is the third of Harris's career. In addition to last week, he also won the award for the week of March 31, 2015 when, as a sophomore, he defeated the No. 4-ranked player in the nation in singles to help the Sooners topple No. 10 Texas.
The Sooners are back in action this weekend as they host a pair of non-conference opponents. OU faces Wichita State on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. CT and then Alabama on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. CT. Both matches will be played inside the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion at the Headington Family Tennis Center. As always, admission for regular season matches is free.
