NORMAN – Oklahoma women's tennis' Lily Miyazaki closed the ITA All-American Championships Sunday in the consolation final, where she was defeated by Kansas' Anastasia Rychagova, 6-3, 7-5.
“I am proud of Lily for putting together a solid week of tennis. She's shown she belongs at the top of college tennis,” said OU head coach Audra Cohen. “Today she came up just short, but she left the match with a lot of motivation to continue her growth as a player and person.”
No. 19 Miyazaki opened the tournament in the main draw with Vanderbilt's No. 47 Christina Rosca, who defeated the Sooner in an extended match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Miyazaki then moved to the consolation bracket, where she took down No. 93 Brooke Austin of Florida in the first round, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The senior went the distance with Winthrop's No. 55 Lauren Proctor to come out on top of a tight three-setter, winning 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5, in the following round.
In semifinal action, Miyazaki bested No. 71 Marianna Petrei of Idaho in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4, to advance to the consolation final.
Miyazaki finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and as a consolation finalist, has earned an automatic bid to the Oracle ITA Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., Nov. 1-5.
Miyazaki and the Sooners return to action on Oct. 19 at the ITA Central Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Kansas.
