Sooners Set for ITA Regional Championships

NORMAN –  The Oklahoma men's tennis squad heads to Minnesota for the ITA Central Region Championships beginning Thursday.

Ferran Calvo, Alexandre Bakshi, Jake van Emburgh, Adrian Oetzbach, Jochen Bertsch, James Daivs and Mason Bridegan will make the trip and look to continue the Sooners' fall success at the tournament.

Three Oklahoma players have brought home fall titles, with Calvo winning back-to-back championships at the Racquet Club Invitational and the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall. The junior is 17-1 in singles during the fall tournament play.

Bakshi was the Napa Valley Tennis Classic champion in the Sooners' season-opening event, while van Emburgh took home the Houndstooth draw title at the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall.

Calvo enters the weekend fresh off his remarkable run at the ITA All-American, where he went 8-1 to advance through the prequalifying and qualifying draws and earn a spot in the main bracket. Calvo advanced to the round of 16 before he was defeated by eventual champion William Blumberg of North Carolina.

Oetzbach also comes into the tournament after a successful run at the Fountain Valley Futures pro event in September. The sophomore won four straight matches in the qualifying draw to earn one of eight main draw berths, where he advanced to the round of 16.

In last year's regional tournament, the Sooners finished with 14 combined wins in main draw play, beginning with a combined 7-0 start in singles action.

Singles and doubles champions receive an automatic bid to the ITA Fall National Championships in Palm Desert, Calif., November 1-5.

Draws for the tournament will be announced Thursday, with play beginning the same day.
