RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded the first day of the Wolfpack Invitational Friday at North Carolina State with a combined 4-4 record in singles play and 2-5 in doubles play.
"Overall we competed well today," OU head coach Audra Cohen said. "We started a little slow in the first round of doubles and picked up speed by the second round."
In the first set of doubles matches, OU fell to Ole Miss, 3-1. The Sooners' No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Lily Miyazaki and freshman Julie Byrne fell to Zalina Khairudinova and Tea Jandric, 7-6 (9-7). At the No. 2 line junior Malene Stripp and freshman Serena Nash snagged the first OU win, 6-1, over Natalie Suk and Anna Vrbenska.
"I was impressed with the level we brought at one doubles," Cohen said. "It's not easy to step into the doubles lineup as a freshman and Julie [Byrne] handled it very well. I also liked Serena [Nash] and Malene's [Stripp] energy at two and I think they can grow into a strong team."
Junior duo Christie Brigante and Simran Sethi dropped a tight match, 7-6 (2), to Ole Miss' Tereza Janatova and Brooke Stevens. Redshirt senior Mimi Fotopoulos and junior Brooke Withrow lost, 6-1, to the Rebels' Cameron Kriscunas and Allie Sanford in their opening match Friday.
In their second doubles pairing, the Sooners split matches with Princeton. Miyazaki/Byrne defeated Caroline Joyce and Nicole Kalhorn, 6-4. Sethi/Fotopoulos fell, 6-4, to the Tigers' Clare McKee and Tiffany Chen.
In singles play, Oklahoma took on host NC State in Friday afternoon's singles match. The Sooners fell to the Wolfpack, 4-3. No. 72 Miyazaki picked up a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 three-set win over the Wolfpacks' No. 29 Martina Frantova at the No. 1 line.
"Lily [Miyazaki] had a very big win today at one," Cohen said. "She had to change her tactics multiple times throughout the match and did a great job playing the right kind of tennis at the right times. She is very talented and today she was able to translate that into an adaptive gameplan that was against her opponent."
Simran Sethi won the tiebreaker and the match over NC State's Bianca Moldovan, 6-3, 7-6 (3). The next Sooner victory came as Fotopoulos beat Adriana Reami, 6-1, 6-3.
"Mimi was impressive as well today. She has an incredible amount of heart on the court and brought great energy today," Cohen said of the senior.
In their first collegiate singles matches, both freshmen were defeated. Byrne fell, 6-4, 6-3, to the Wolfpacks' Tayla Stenta. NC State's Claudia Wiktorin bested Nash, 6-1, 6-0.
"The freshman got their first taste of collegiate tennis. They struggled to get their teeth into the match, but they will head into tomorrow more prepared," Cohen said.
The last two OU losses came as Stripp fell, 6-1, 6-2, to Amanda Rebol. Brigante lost a three-set battle, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, to Anna Rogers to end singles play against NC State.
"Christie [Brigante] competed well today and came up just short," Cohen said. "She will head into tomorrow ready to battle with the rest of her Sooners."
In an extra match, Ole Miss' Brooke Stevens defeated Withrow, 6-0, 6-1.
The Sooners are back in action Saturday at 8 a.m CT as they face the Wolfpack in doubles.
