NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team picked up five All-Big 12 honors, the conference announced on Thursday. Axel Alvarez and Andrew Harris were both named First Team in singles and doubles while Alex Ghilea was named to the Second Team in singles.
The honors are the seventh and eighth for Alvarez. The senior, OU's all-time leader in career wins and career singles wins, has been named to the All-Big 12 teams for both singles and doubles in all four of his years at Oklahoma.
Harris earns his fifth and sixth All-Big 12 honors. The junior, who has played only five singles matches due to injuries this year, has also been named to both squads in each of his years of eligibility. Harris returned to singles in Big 12 regular season play, after a near 10-month layoff, and went 4-1, including winning his last four consecutive matches. Harris did not play in the Big 12 Championship, but should return to action for OU in the NCAA Championship, which starts this weekend in Norman.
Ghilea's appearance on the All-Big 12 singles team is a career first. The junior from Neamt, Romania was also named All-Big 12 in doubles a year ago. Ghilea is 9-6 on the year, playing primarily at the number three spot.
The Sooners are back in action this weekend as they host Tulsa, Oregon and UT Arlington for first and second round action of the 2016 NCAA Championships. OU will take on UTA in the first round on Friday, May 13 at 4 p.m. CT at the Heading ton Family Tennis Center. With a win, the Sooners would advance to the second round on Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. CT.
