Payton Jordan Invitational

May 01, 2016 | Track and Field
STANFORD, Calif. - Undoubtedly inspired by the surrounding mountain views, peak performances highlighted the day for the OU track and field teams at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
Sooners Daye Shon Roberson and Sarah Scott rewrote a pair of program records during the first half of the day as Roberson topped the 200-meter list and Scott replaced her own record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Roberson finished in second in the 200 with a time of 22.65 just behind San Diego State's Ashley Henderson, who ran a 22.64 and entered competition ranked 25th on the NCAA qualifying list. The two traded positions several times on the straightaway, but Henderson slightly edged Roberson in the end.
The junior also tallied a season best to win the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.42.

Sarah Scott bested her previous program-record setting performance in the 3K steeplechase in her second steeple competition of her career.
Scott (10:28.29) finished 12th in section three in the second steeple competition of her career and is two-for-two in breaking OU records each time out. She recorded the previous program record (10:31.24) in her steeple debut in Baton Rouge, La., in early April.
"I wish our women's team could get two school PRs in every meet we went to, that'd be nice," said head coach Jim VanHootegem. "It was an amazing doubleheader by Daye Shon in the 400 and 200, with a victory in the 400 and the school record in the 200. We're very proud of Sarah Scott again with two races in the steeple and two school records. She's setting a standard for OU in that event."
The Sooners amassed 16 PRs on Sunday and will return with more potential NCAA qualifying marks.

Junior Dylan Blankenbaker recorded a PR in the men's steeplechase to move to second all-time at OU and possibly jump to a 10th-place position on the NCAA qualifying list pending other results. Liam Meirow also found his stride in the event and subtracted nearly 20 seconds from his previous best of 9:26.34 to run a PR 9:07.11.
"Dylan ran a great time and is now behind his teammate Brandon Doughty on the all-time list," VanHootegem said. "There were lots of PRs so that's a good sign. I was especially proud of the athletes who was able to come to the meet, create their own energy and put themselves in a good place going into the postseason."
In addition to the steeple, several distance events also produced best marks for OU entries. For the women, Kelsey McKee ran a 4:22.15 in the 1,500 meter while Blake Yount finished the men's 800 with a 1:50.18 effort. With that performance, McKee joined OU's elite with the fifth-best program time and Yount added a PR.

Trae Armstrong earned meet titles in the 100- and 200-meter races on Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational.
Brittany Tretbar also recorded a PR in the 5000-meter run with a 16:43.97 to remain ninth on OU's all-time list. Elena Arriaza ran a 17:29.18.
In the men's sprints, Trae Armstrong produced solid performances in the 100- and 200-meter races with meet titles coming in both events despite not running personal bests.
Freshman Greg Vann added another PR to the boards for the Sooners in the 200 registering a 21.98.
The 200 was also favorable for Baileh Simms (25.13), Brianna Rodriguez (25.19), Daunicia Demerson (24.25) and Payton Baker (24.57) each recording a PR in the event, while Mia Mukes ran a collegiate-best 55.36 in the 400.

The Sooners head into the postseason next with the Big 12 Championship on May 13-15 in Fort Worth, Texas. While the teams fine tune over the next week, the coaches are still pleased with where they are.
"We feel good about the women's team and what they've achieved so far this year," the VanHootegem added. "I'm looking forward to the type of meet we can have if we perform well at Big 12 and everyone gets after it as a group.
"On the men's side, we're not there yet, but we're close," he continued. "There is strong leadership and I do believe there are some people who are more than capable of having breakout performances."
