NORMAN - Five members of the 8th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team, the conference announced Tuesday. The Sooners' five honorees are the most of any Big 12 team.
Seniors Axel Alvarez (economics) and Austin Siegel (administrative leadership) as well as juniors Alex Ghilea (management) and Andrew Harris (management) earned First Team honors while sophomore Spencer Papa (administrative leadership) was named to the Second Team.
Ghilea, Harris and Alvarez all make their second appearance on the All-Big 12 Academic Team while Siegel and Papa make their first appearances.
Twenty-one total student-athletes make up the men's team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
