Bobby Lane Invitational

March 26, 2016 | Track and Field
NORMAN - Oklahoma sprinters blew by their competitors on the second day of the Bobby Lane Invitational in Arlington, Texas, to produce a pair of meet titles.
On a windy Saturday, the Sooners' track and field teams notched the top spots in the women's 4x100-meter relay on the combined efforts of Ama Pipi, Daunicia Demerson, Daye Shon Roberson and Leya Buchanan, who ran a 44.55. That time ranks 10th on the all- time list. Demerson also earned a meet title with a 54.49 PR in the 400.
Their efforts were matched by Chase Sammons, who won his first meet of the outdoor season in the discus with a personal best 186-10.00 mark. That moved him into a tie for fourth with Kevin Bookout on OU's all-time top 10.

Chase Sammons moves to fourth on OU's all-time list with his 186-10.00 discus mark on Saturday at the Bobby Lane Invitational in Arlington, Texas.
The Sooners also saw personal best performances in the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Pipi finished as the runner-up, the highest place for OU entries, in the 200 after recording a 23.71. The sophomore's previous best was a 24.21 from a season ago.
Bianca Brazil and Olivia Haggerty also saw career bests in the 100 dash and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Brazil, a junior, finished 11th with a time of 11.92 in her second individual race of the season. Haggerty, who had her outdoor debut on Saturday, ran a 13.67 to improve from 13.91. Her time Saturday ranks as the eighth best in school history.
"I saw a variety of things today and Nene (Daunicia Demerson) and Chase (Sammons) got PRs today along with Ama (Pipi), Olivia (Haggerty) and several others," said head coach Jim VanHootegem. "Those were some good performances and I saw others that were trying to earn their way on the bus permanently to be a part of the travel team."
OU's success on Saturday comes after Sooners Charles Nguyen (200-9.00) and Ashley Bryant (178-10) swept the men's and women's hammer throw competitions late Friday to open the UT-Arlington-hosted meet.

The Sooners also saw top-four finishes across multiple events. Howard cleared a 6-6.75 and Foster earned a 163-8.00.
"It wasn't a team scored meet so we were hoping that some people took some sort of chance," the head coach said. "They tried to make a change in their race strategy or work on technical things the coaches showed them and those are things that are a little bit difficult to measure."
The Sooners return to action in a pair of meets next week. One group heads to the annual Texas Relays Wednesday through Saturday while a second group heads farther west to the Stanford Invitational for a Friday-Saturday meet.
