Stephens, who was the Big 12 runner-up in the heptathlon in 2015, recorded a 36-2.25 to surpass her previous best of 34-7.00 that she recorded at the conference championship a season ago.

She totaled 3,042 points after Wednesday's first four events with 548 came from the shot. It was her lowest event point total of the day as she scored 941 points in the 100-meter hurdles (14.27), 736 in the high jump (5-3.00) and 817 in the 200 meter (25.77)

Makayla Stephens tallied 941 points in the 100-meter hurdles recording a time of 14.27 on the first day of the Texas Relays.

Her three remaining events are the long jump, javelin and the 800-meter run. Her heptathlon bests in those events are 19-4.00, 111-5.00 and 2:24.95, respectively. She set all her bests last year as a freshman, competing in the multi- events for the first time in her career.

Stephens opens action for the Sooners on Thursday at 11 a.m. (CT) in 22nd place and is less than 150 points from a top-10 spot. She finished 14th at the Texas Relays in 2015, tallying 5,067 points.

Makayla Stephens resumes action on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.

The sophomore will be joined by teammates Julia Reedy, SarahTolson and Ashley Bryant who compete in the hammer throw at 11 a.m.
