NORMAN – Making her first start since Feb. 25, sophomore Paige Parker threw the fifth no-hitter of her career as No. 13/14 Oklahoma (14-4) run-ruled BYU (13-9), 8-0, in five innings at the OU Tournament.
Parker, who tied an NCAA record as a freshman last year with four perfect games, struck out a season-high 11 batters Friday. The only baserunner she allowed was a two-out walk in the first inning. She is now 4-2 on the year.
Parker struck out the side in the third and fifth innings as she retired the final 13 batters she faced. It was the fourth double-digit strikeout game of her career.
With her five no-hitters, Parker trails only Keilani Ricketts (7) for most individual no-hitters in program history. In addition, Parker combined with senior Kelsey Stevens on a no-hitter last year in the NCAA Regional against Central Arkansas.
Offensively, freshman Sydney Romero tied a career high with three hits as she came a home run short of becoming the first player in school history to hit for the cycle. She led off the game with a triple, added an RBI double in the fourth inning and had a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the fifth.
Parker's teammates gave her all the run support she'd need in the first inning.
Romero led off the game with her third triple of the season and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, with two on and one out, senior Erin Miller blasted a three-run home run to center field. It was her fourth homer of the year and No. 15 in her career.
It was also the seventh straight game that OU homered in. The team has hit 13 home runs during that stretch.
After two scoreless innings passed, Romero hit an RBI double in the fourth inning to push the lead to 5-0.
The Sooners then captured their sixth run-rule win and seventh shutout with three runs in the fifth.
Sophomore Lea Wodach led off with a single to extend her hit streak to a career best 11 games. That's the longest by a Sooner since Shelby Pendley's 14-game hitting streak during the 2014 season. Freshman Raegan Rogers pinch ran for Wodach and reached second and third thanks to a pair of passed balls.
A sacrifice fly from fellow freshman Fale Aviu made it 6-0 for Oklahoma. Miller kept the attack going with a double and was replaced on the bases by fellow senior Paris Townsend. Senior Kady Self walked, and she and Townsend moved into scoring position after a wild pitch.
Parker walked to fill the bases, while freshman Caleigh Clifton picked up an RBI with a walk on six pitches. After a strikeout, Romero ended the game as she drilled a shot off the wall in center field, scoring Self for the run-rule win.
Oklahoma is back in action Saturday with two more games at the OU Tournament. The Sooners meet BYU for a second consecutive game at 3:30 p.m. CT, before facing Maryland for the first time in program history at 5:45 p.m. Saturday night.
