FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – University of Oklahoma women's tennis player Lily Miyazaki kicked off the USTA ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships with a three-set victory over No. 6 seed Sara Daavettila of North Carolina.
No. 72 Miyazaki grabbed the lead after winning the first set, but Daavettila, the No. 3 freshman in the country, battled back to take the second set. Miyazaki took control in the third, taking the final set and the match, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
"Lily [Miyazaki] stayed tough today against a tricky opponent that was very good at playing a passive aggressive style," OU head coach Audra Cohen said. "She was very disciplined with her positioning and shot selection in the third set, which made the difference. I'm proud of her and excited for the next round tomorrow."
The Tokyo native advances to the round of 16 after the victory. She moves on to 7-1 against ranked opponents during the fall season following Thursday's win.
Miyazaki will face Vanderbilt's No. 12 Sydney Campbell Friday morning. Campbell defeated Pepperdine's No. 48 Mayar Ahmed, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round.
