Miyazaki Travels to National Indoors

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma women's tennis player Lily Miyazaki travels to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. for the USTA ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Play begins Thursday at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center and runs through Sunday.

No. 72 Miyazaki, a junior, qualified after winning the ITA Central Regional singles crown in October. She faces the top freshman in the country and the tournament's No. 6 seed, Sara Daavettila of North Carolina, at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday.

“National Indoors is an exciting opportunity for Lily [Miyazaki] to compete among the best in college tennis,” OU head coach Audra Cohen said. “She has a lot of confidence knowing that this opportunity was earned through her hard work at regionals, and I am excited to see her embrace this moment in her college career.”

On her route to National Indoors, OU's Miyazaki is 6-1 against ranked opponents. Her first win of fall play came over North Carolina State's No. 29 Martina Frantova at the Wolfpack Invitational. Miyazaki knocked off her highest-ranked opponent, No. 17 Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss, in the opening round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 6.

Her only loss came to Ohio State's No. 3 Francesca Di Lorenzo in a marathon match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16 at the Riviera/ITA Championships.

While Miyazaki competes for the National Indoor title, the rest of the team will travel to Florida State for the Seminole All-Conference Showdown. This eight-team tournament begins Friday at 8 a.m. CT at FSU's Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
