Miyazaki To Play In Prestigious Tournament

October 03, 2016 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma women's tennis player No. 72 Lily Miyazaki travels to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the prestigious ITA/Riviera All-American Championships.

Miyazaki will start in the qualifying round on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. CT with a first-round match against New Mexico's Andrea LeBlanc.

“I am very proud of Lily for getting the opportunity to play in the prestigious ITA All-American event,” OU head coach and former ITA All-American Audra Cohen said. “She is a very talented player that has the tools to play multiple game styles in order to beat her opponent.”

Last fall, Miyazaki began play in the pre-qualifying round beating Washington's Elianne Douglas-Miron in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6). The junior moved on to the second round Sunday, facing Jessica Failla of USC, but fell 6-1, 3-6, 4-6.

So far this fall, Miyazaki is a perfect 5-0 in singles play, with two wins over ranked opponents. Both wins came at North Carolina's Wolfpack Invite two weeks ago. The Tokyo, Japan, native defeated NC State's No. 29 Martina Frantova in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. She also beat Ole Miss' No. 51 Natalie Suk in straight sets.

“I have no doubt that if she is able to use her tools effectively and efficiently she has a good chance to define herself as one of the top players in the nation,” Cohen said.
