STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma men's tennis team wrapped up its five-day trip to Stillwater on Monday, as senior Alex Ghilea and junior Spencer Papa finished runners-up in doubles at the 2016 ITA Regional Championships Presented by Oracle.
Overall, the five Sooners in competition at the Central Regional Championships – Ghilea, Papa, senior Florin Bragusi, junior walk-on Mason Bridegan and redshirt sophomore John Milstead - finished with 14 combined wins in main draw play, nine of which came in singles and five in doubles.
In singles, Bragusi, Ghilea and Papa each earned three wins to reach the quarterfinals. All three victories on Saturday in the round of 16 came over Oklahoma State opponents.
It was the second time this fall season out of three tournaments that Ghilea and Papa advanced to the quarterfinals or further in singles play. Ghilea reached the quarterfinals at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., the same tournament where Papa finished runner-up in singles.
In doubles, the Sooners' pairing of Bragusi and Milstead earned a 9-7 win in the opening round on Thursday over Uldis Gaismins and Amaury Navette of UMKC.
Oklahoma's tandem of Ghilea and Papa used four wins in doubles to advance to the championship match. The duo's quarterfinals win came over familiar foes, Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza of Oklahoma State, followed by a victory over Tulsa's Francois and Okkie Kellerman, 6-4, 7-6(7), in the semifinals.
On Monday, the two fell to Julian Cash/Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State, the No. 1 doubles pairing in the country in Oracle/ITA's preseason rankings, in a tightly contested three-set thriller, 6-2, 3-6, 0-1(9).
