MINNEAPOLIS  – Oklahoma women's tennis team recorded five singles victories on the opening day of the ITA Central Region tournament at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center Thursday.

OU's trio of freshman turned in a strong performance by picking up opening-round wins. In her debut for the Sooners, Ann Selim took a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Minnesota's Kalyssa Hall. She moves on to the second round and will face Elise Van Heuvelen of Iowa Friday.

“It was nice to see Ann Selim get her first taste of competition. She played well and handled her nerves with great composure,” Oklahoma head coach Audra Cohen said. “The freshmen were strong today and did a great job being energy leaders all day.”

Freshman Serena Nash continued her successful play this fall, sprinting past Northern Iowa's Savanna Hall, 6-0, 6-2. Nash advances to take on Mariam Kuasbediani of UMKC Friday afternoon.

Julie Byrne made quick work of South Dakota State's Laura Romero with a 6-1, 6-1 win. She will face off against Missouri's Tate Schroeder in the second round.

Fresh off a strong performance at the Rivera/ITA All-American Championships, junior No. 72 Lily Miyazaki opened the regional event with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ana Sofia Cordero of SIU-Carbondale. Redshirt senior Mimi Fotopoulos defeated SIU-Carbondale's Athena Chrysanthou, 6-3, 6-2.
