NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team debuted at No. 35 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) 2016 preseason poll.
“We have been talking as team since May about the importance of trying to build upon the foundation we laid last season. With only losing one player from last year's squad, we are in the unique position of trying to pick up from where we left off,” head coach Dave Mullins said.

Leading the Sooners is sophomore Lily Miyazaki. The defending Co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Miyazaki finished her rookie season with a 15-4 record at the No. 1 singles position and 9-5 record at the No. 2 doubles position. The 2015 ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year finished fall 2015 tournament play with a 10-2 record, including an undefeated weekend in singles and doubles at the Northwestern Fall Duals. Miyazaki also won the top singles flight at the UNLV Rebel Women's Tennis Invitational in November.

Sophomore Lily Miyazaki finished the 2015 season with several awards, including being named ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year and co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
Making her first appearance for the Sooners is redshirt junior Mimi Fotopoulos. Fotopoulos sat out the 2015 season after transferring from TCU. As a sophomore with the Horned Frogs, she compiled a 7-6 record for the Horned Frogs. As a freshman at Tennessee, Fotopoulos was 17-14 in singles play, placing her third among the Lady Vols for number of singles wins. She finished fall tournament play with a 5-6 singles record and a 4-1 doubles record.

Mimi Fotopoulos plays in the OU Invite in September, her first appearance with the Sooners.
Senior Emma Devine finished the 2015 season for the Sooners with a 6-9 doubles record, including a 5-8 record at the No. 1 position. She was 2-3 in singles play at the No. 6 position. Zita Engbroks, the Sooners' only other senior, did not play in the fall due to injury. In the 2015 season, she compiled a 17-17 record, going 6-0 at the No. 5 singles position. Engbroks posted a seven-match win streak, beginning with Portland and ending with Iowa State.
Oklahoma also returns four other sophomores: Christie Brigante, Malene Stripp, Simran Sethi and Brooke Withrow, along with junior Ann Pepper.
Brigante finished fall play with a 5-6 record. The Weston, Fla., native compiled a 20-14 singles record as a freshman. Highlighting her freshman season was a comeback from a first set loss to win the No. 5 singles position, giving the Sooners a NCAA 1st round win over No. 18 Ohio State.
Stripp was 6-4 in the fall, including a 3-0 weekend at the Northwestern Fall Duals. As a freshman, she posted a 5-6 singles record.
Sethi was 7-10 in singles play in 2015, including 7-9 at the No. 2 position. She, along with partner Miyazaki, compiled a 9-6 record in doubles action.

The Sooners open the 2016 season at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Jan. 17 at noon against No. 39 Wichita State.
“With our ranking being the same as it was last May, it gives a real opportunity to continue our progress to where we want to go. We are looking forward to a very tough opening match with Wichita State and taking the season one match at a time,” Mullins said.
