Sooners Name Team Captains for 2016 Season

January 13, 2016 | Track and Field

In a break from the past, the University of Oklahoma track and field teams will have captains, who were selected by their teammates, when the 2016 season opens on Saturday. The Sooners host the 15th J.D. Martin Invitational at the Mosier Indoor Facility. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events start at noon.

“This is something we have been wanting to do and, as coaches, we were very comfortable with starting the process with this year's team,” head coach Jim VanHootegem explained. “You want to be able to have team leaders who convey the messages to the team from the coaches and you need to be able to trust the feedback you get from your captains. We wanted team leaders and not team lawyers.

“We think we have a great group of captains for this season,” the third year Sooner head coach continued. “We had some of the 10 who grew into this leadership role this season while others were already leaders.”

Serving as captains for the Sooners this season will be Trae Armstrong, Brandon Doughty, Hayden McClain, Julia Reedy, Daye Shon Roberson, Chase Sammons, Baileh Simms, Makayla Stephens, Brittany Tretbar and Tanner Williams. Doughty, Reedy, Sammons and Williams are seniors while Armstrong, McClain, Roberson, Simms and Tretbar are juniors. Stephens is the lone sophomore among the 10.

The process of selecting captains started with each event area selecting its leaders. Captains were selected by the entire team from those student-athletes as coaches wanted leaders who were able to cross over and connect team areas.

“It's always better when the leadership comes from the team,” VanHootegem added. “We have high expectations for this team and our captains do as well. We have a very good group to give and receive feedback, who will then share it with their teammates. It was important for our captains to understand expectations and to be able to share that.

“They had to understand that you will only have one 2016 University of Oklahoma track and field team, a very unique opportunity. You have a program and you have teams within a program. We expect our captains to set the tone for what the 2016 team will be known for. The captains will be tremendously important in determining the answers to that question. We believe we have a great group to do that.”
