Papa to Play in Consolation Final

LAFAYETTE, La. – Sophomore Spencer Papa was the lone Sooner in action on Saturday at the Cajun Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana.

Papa picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Edgar Lopez of the host Ragin' Cajuns in the semifinals round of the consolation draw. The win moves Papa to 3-1 for the tournament and earns him a spot in Sunday's consolation final.

“Spencer played great,” assistant coach Bobby Reynolds said. “Coming out with just one match today, he really played the way that I know he can. He took care of business and held his serve. He made the other guy play over and over off the return. He is gaining momentum and I can see some of the things that he is trying to work on. This a good stage to continue to do that.”

The Edmond, Okla., native will face Arthur Libaud of Louisiana in the consolation final on Sunday at 9 a.m. Papa will have a full day to rest after having played four singles matches and one doubles match in the last three days.

“Being able to only play one mach today is nice,” Reynolds said. “He has had most of the afternoon to recover. He will rest and relax and be ready to go tomorrow.”
