MALIBU, Calif. – Oklahoma men's tennis player Axel Alvarez wrapped up the opening weekend of the Sooners' fall schedule on Sunday.
Alvarez, the top-ranked player in collegiate tennis, came up just short against the nation's No. 2 player and defending national champion Ryan Shane in the finals of the consolation draw at the 2015 Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. Alvarez fell 4-6, 3-6 and finishes the weekend at 2-2.
“It was a tough weekend,” head coach John Roddick said. “Axel did a great job committing to working on his game. These matches are going to help him in his upcoming ATP Challengers.”
The senior from Asturias, Spain picked up a pair of ranked wins on Saturday, topping No. 11 Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest 7-5, 6-2, and No. 31 Max Tchoutakian of Baylor 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Those wins earned Alvarez a place in the consolation final against Shane. The reigning national and Big 12 Player of the Year previously faced Shane in the Sooners' national championship match against Virginia back in May. Alvarez led that match one set to none and was serving at 5-all in the second set when the dual was clinched.
Alvarez will look to put the weekend's experience to good use this weekend as the Sooners are back in action at the Cajun Classic at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. The tournament begins Thursday, Sept. 24 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 27.
