Sooner Mixed Doubles Duo Qualifies for U.S. Open

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Former Sooners Andrei Daescu and Anda Perianu secured a spot in the mixed doubles draw for the 2015 U.S. Open Saturday.

Daescu and Perianu, both natives of Romania, qualifed for the mixed doubles draw by defeating Jacqueline Cako and Joel Kiebowicz, 6-2, 6-4 in U.S. Open Playoff  at the WTA's Connecticut Open.

Perianu was OU's first ITA All-American in women's tennis history and was named the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. She was also a three-time All-Big 12 selection with the Sooners, qualifying for the NCAA Individual Championships three times (2002-04). Perianu climbed to as high as 120 in the WTA singles rankings back in 2006.

Daescu lettered for four seasons at OU from 2007-10, finishing in the top-10 nationally in men's singles during his final season with the Sooners. He played for Romania's Davis Cup team in 2012 and reached No. 126 in the world in the ATP doubles rankings in 2013. Daescu currently serves as an assistant coach at Cornell.

The mixed doubles main draw for the U.S. Open will be released Aug. 31.
