Men's Tennis Begins 2016 Campaign Ranked No. 2

Tennis to Host 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend

June 08, 2015 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN – For the fourth consecutive season the Oklahoma men's tennis team will serve as a host for the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The 2016 Kick-Off will run Jan. 22-24 and will be played indoors at the Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion of the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The ITA Kick-Off Weekend was created in 2009 as a qualifier for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Sixty schools compete at 15 host sites for spots in the National Indoor Championships, hosted this year by defending NCAA national champion Virginia at the Boar's Head Inn Tennis Center on Feb. 12-15.

After the 15 host sites are named, a draft is held in which teams, in order of final ITA ranking, select the site at which they will play. Four teams will compete at each site, with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed playing the No. 3 seed. The winners of those matches will then play for a spot in the national tournament.

With Virginia earning an automatic berth as the host school, Oklahoma was the highest ranked team to host a Kick-Off Weekend. The Sooners will be joined in Norman by UTSA, Troy and Utah State.

The Roadrunners of UTSA will be the No. 2 seed in Norman. UTSA went 17-9 in 2015 and won the Conference USA Championship before falling in the first round of the NCAA Championships to LSU. The Roadrunners, who finished No. 62 in the final ITA rankings, will take on Troy in the first round of play. As the No. 3 seed, Troy will be making its second ever appearance in the Kick-Off Weekend. The Trojans finished the 2015 season ranked No. 63 by the ITA with a record of 25-7 and having won the Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Oklahoma will play No. 4 seed Utah State on the first day. The Aggies finished 2015 ranked No. 68 in the final ITA poll with a program record 18 wins.

The Sooners have advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in each of the last three seasons. In 2014, Oklahoma bested New Mexico State in the first round and then topped Northwestern to advance, dropping just one point along the way. The Sooners would go on to claim the national indoor title for the first time in program history.
