Sooners Travel to Nashville for Regionals

May 07, 2015 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. – The third-seeded Oklahoma women's tennis team begins play at the 2015 NCAA Tennis Championships this weekend in Nashville, Tenn. The Sooners open first round action against the second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes Friday, May 8 at noon CT.

A win will pit the Sooners against the winner of Vanderbilt and Murray State. Vanderbilt is the tournament's No. 4 overall seed and the top seed in the Nashville Regional.

Oklahoma finished the regular season with a 14-9 overall record. Co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year Lily Miyazaki has headlined the squad throughout the season, earning a 15-4 record at No. 1 singles and a 9-5 record at No. 2 doubles.

The Sooners will likely use four freshman in both singles and doubles for the 12th time this season. The four freshman that have participated in spring play have compiled a 37-24 singles record and a 23-16 doubles record.

The Buckeyes enter the tournament with a 20-6 overall record and 11-1 record in Big Ten Conference play, with all six losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. Miyazaki will likely matchup at No. 1 singles with Gabriella De Santis who owns a 10-3 record at the position.

Another Buckeye to watch is Sandy Niehaus, who owns a 19-3 dual record this spring. Niehaus and De Santis have compiled a 13-6 doubles record and a 12-5 record at the No. 1 position.

OU head coach David Mullins hopes warm temperatures in the forecast can assist his team in pulling off an upset.

“We need to take advantage of the conditions because Ohio State is an indoor team,” said Mullins. “They haven't been exposed to some of the hotter temperatures that we have been exposed to. Even though it will be 90 degrees and we haven't played in that yet, we will definitely be more accustomed to it.”

The host school, Vanderbilt, played three Big 12 opponents during the regular season. The Commodores defeated Baylor and Texas at home, while losing to Oklahoma State in Charlottesville, Va., at the ITA National Team Indoors.

“Vanderbilt has really been coming into form as of late,” said Mullins. “They won the SEC Tournament, which is not easy to do. They are playing their best tennis at the right time.”

The SEC Tournament champions feature a two-headed monster at No. 1 and No. 2 singles that would give Miyazaki and fellow freshman Simran Sethi their biggest challenge of the season if both teams were to advance.

At No. 1, 8th-ranked Sydney Campbell holds a 14-9 record, including a 12-8 record against nationally ranked opponents. At No. 2, Astra Sharma has compiled a 13-2 record (21-3 overall). Her record against ranked opponents stands at 12-1.

Miyazaki and Sethi have a 9-4 record at No. 2 doubles, however, they wouldn't catch a break in doubles either. Sharma and Ashleigh Antal are 14-0 at the No. 2 position.

Murray State earned the automatic bid from the Ohio Valley Conference and enters the weekend with 17-3 overall record and an eight match winning streak. If both win Friday, the matchup would pit Miyazaki against Andrea Eskauriatza at No. 1 singles. Eskauriatza sports a 14-2 record in dual play, including an 11 match winning streak. Erin Patton is undefeated at 14-0, participating at four different singles positions. She is likely to be matched with junior Emma Devine at No. 6 singles.

Scoring Format

Tournament matches will be regulation dual matches with three eight-game, pro-set doubles played for one team point, followed by six singles matches, each valued at one team point, played in best-of-three sets. Regular scoring will be used and a 12-point tiebreaker will be played at seven-games-all in doubles and at six-games-all in singles. Advantage will be played at deuce.
