NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma women's tennis freshman Lily Miyazaki was named the Co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year Wednesday, marking the first time a Sooner has been awarded this distinction. Miyazaki also earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Singles team.

“Lily has done an outstanding job for us at the No. 1 spot this season and I believe she would have several more wins to her name had she been able to finish her matches against a few of the top teams,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “Lily will have a great number of opportunities to work on her ranking next fall and I have no doubt she will be one of the top players in the country this time next year.”

Miyazaki shares the Co-Freshman of the Year award with Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech.

Miyazaki led the Sooners all season at the No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles positions. Her 15-4 mark this leads the team in wins, as does her 9-5 record at No. 2 doubles. She holds a record of 4-3 in finished Big 12 Conference matches.

In fall tournament play, Miyazaki compiled a 9-3 record, giving her overall record a boost to 24-7 for the 2014-15 academic year. Her single season winning percentage of .774 ranks eighth in school history (min. 20 matches).

“Not only is she a great tennis player but she is also a wonderful person, teammate, and student,” said Mullins. “We are very fortunate to have her representing the University of Oklahoma.”

Miyazaki has also given some of the Big 12's top players a legitimate fight in conference play, taking sets from players who held national rankings of 22nd (Ema Burgic, Baylor) and 69th (Kenna Kilgo, Texas Tech).

The Sooners begin post season play Friday. Oklahoma faces the Ohio State Buckeyes at noon during the first round of the 2015 NCAA Tennis Championship in Nashville, Tenn.
