Run at Individual Championships Ends

May 21, 2015 | Men's Tennis

WACO, Texas – Oklahoma men's tennis player Axel Alvarez had his run in the NCAA Individual Championships end Thursday with a loss in the second round of play.

The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year and collegiate No. 1 fell to No. 35 Tony Lupieri of Baylor 6-4, 6-4 after giving up a break in each set. It was the fourth singles match in as many days for Alvarez and his sixth in the last eight days.

Alvarez had advanced to the second round with a three-set, come-from-behind win over No. 18 Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss on Wednesday. Oklahoma's No. 1 singles player finishes the season with a record of 28-3.

Alvarez had also been scheduled to play in the 32-team doubles draw with senior Dane Webb, but the Sooner duo, which was selected as an at large bid, withdrew from the competition.

With Alvarez's loss and the withdrawal in doubles, the Sooners' time at the NCAA Championships in Waco comes to an end. Oklahoma finishes as the national runner-up for the second straight year with a record of 29-3.
