NORMAN – Three Oklahoma men's tennis players were selected to participate in the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships and one Sooner doubles team made the 32-team doubles draw the NCAA announced Thursday.
Junior Axel Alvarez, sophomore Andrew Harris and senior Dane Webb will all compete in the tournament which takes place May 20-25 in Waco, Texas following the conclusion of the NCAA Team Championships. Alvarez and Webb will also pair for the doubles championship.
Alvarez was the Big 12 Conference's automatic qualifier and will be the tournament's No.1 overall seed. This is the first time a Sooner has earned the top spot in the draw. Alvarez finished dual play 21-0 and was named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2015 Big 12 Championship. The junior was selected for the singles championship in 2014 as well, but withdrew.
Harris, an at-large selection, will be making his second appearance in the singles championship. The sophomore, who will be the No. 4 overall seed, competed in the draw last year as a freshman where he won his first round match before falling in the round of 32. Harris finished dual play 17-4 while splitting time at No.1 and No. 2 singles with Alvarez.
Webb, also an at-large selection, rounds out the list of Sooners taking part in the singles draw. Oklahoma's senior captain is making his third appearance in the singles draw. Webb is 2-2 in his career in the tournament. The Richardson, Texas native advanced to the round of 16 in last year's championship. Webb leads Oklahoma in all-time doubles wins and is second in career singles wins.
Alvarez and Webb will pull double duty for the Sooners. The pair, which competed at No. 1 doubles for the entirety of the regular season, was an at-large selection for the 32-team doubles draw. Webb competed in the doubles championship as a freshman with partner Costin Paval and advanced to the semifinals round with a pair of wins.
Oklahoma drew its first ever No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Team Championships on Tuesday and will host the first and second round of play May 8-9 at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Sooners will play New Mexico State in the first round Friday, May 8 at 4 p.m. CT.
