NORMAN – The top-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team will compete in the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas this weekend. Championship play begins Friday, April 24 and runs through Sunday, April 26.

THE DRAW

Oklahoma (22-2, 4-1) enters the championships having won a share of the Big 12 regular season title. The Sooners split the title with Baylor, also 4-1 in conference play. OU will be the championships' No. 1 overall seed by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreak. Oklahoma is 3-0 against Baylor this season.

As the No. 1 overall seed, the Sooners will receive a bye in the first round of play. Oklahoma will play the winner of No. 5 seed Texas Tech and No. 4 seed Texas on Saturday, April 25 in the semifinals round at noon.

The other side of the bracket features No. 2 seed Baylor awaiting the winner of No. 3 seed TCU and No. 6 seed Oklahoma State.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

The Sooners enter the Big 12 Championships having advanced to the finals in each of the last four years. Oklahoma made the finals for the first time in program history in 2011 as the 5-seed, the lowest seed to ever make the finals, before falling to Texas A&M.

Oklahoma claimed its first Big 12 Championship since 1992 when it topped Baylor 4-3 in the finals. The Sooners would see Baylor in the finals again a year later when they repeated as champions with a 4-2 win. Baylor would get revenge in 2014 as the Bears and Sooners met again in the finals. OU led 3-1 at one point, but Baylor would take the next three points to take the title.

EIGHT STRAIGHT

For the eighth consecutive week and the 10th time in program history, the Sooners sit atop the collegiate tennis world as the top-ranked team in the nation. The Sooners' current streak is the only time in program history the team has been No. 1 in consecutive weeks. The team also occupied the top spot for a single week immediately following its title at the indoor championships in February and in 2014 after topping Ohio State at home.

A TOUGH ROW TO HOE

Despite playing perhaps the most difficult schedule in the nation, the Sooners have racked up a record of 22-2 this season. Oklahoma has 17 wins over teams ranked in the ITA top 30 and seven wins over teams ranked in the top 10.

GOING DEEP

The Sooners' depth has been instrumental in their success. Currently, four Sooners are ranked in singles while three doubles teams make the poll. In singles, sophomore Andrew Harris moved up one spot to No. 5 this week while junior Axel Alvarez dropped from the No. 1 spot and now sits at No. 2. Julian Lenz of Baylor now occupies the top spot in singles. Alvarez beat Lenz in three sets during the Sooners' and Bears' conference-play meeting in Waco, Texas. The win helped propel the Sooners to their third win of the year over the second-ranked Bears.

Oklahoma now has two players ranked in the top five of singles for the first time in school history. No other team has more than one player ranked in the top 10.

Oklahoma has been nearly untouchable in the top two singles spots so far this season. Alvarez and Harris have combined to go 34-4 in dual play at the top spots with an 18-0 mark at No. 2 singles. Both players are unbeaten in Big 12 play with Harris at five wins and Alvarez with three.
