Sooners Prepare for Big 12 Championships

April 22, 2015 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team will travel to Waco, Texas, for the Big 12 Tennis Championships, set for April 23-26. The event is being held at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The Sooners enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed after finishing with a 3-6 record in Big 12 play. They begin action Thursday at 10 a.m. with a match against No. 10 seed West Virginia in the first round on the Grandstand courts.

Thursday's match will mark the second time in six days that the two teams play. The Sooners defeated the Mountaineers in their regular season finale by a 4-0 decision. OU holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series and has yet to concede a point, holding an 18-0 advantage.

“I think we were patient,” said OU head coach David Mullins as he looked back to OU's recent win over WVU. “It wasn't our best, but we played solid and played the big points well.”

A win would pit the Sooners against the No. 2 seed Texas Tech Red Raiders. The two teams previously met on March 27 in Lubbock when the Sooners took the doubles point before dropping a 4-1 decision. The match would take place at noon on Friday on the Grandstand courts.

The Sooners have been led by the young but steady hand of freshman Lily Miyazaki. In dual play, she boasts a 14-4 record at the No. 1 position. Her current 2014-15 winning percentage of .767 ranks 9th in program history. In doubles, she has combined for a 9-5 record in dual play, including 8-4 with fellow freshman Simran Sethi.
