NORMAN – Five members of the top-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Redshirt senior Nick Papac (administrative leadership) along with sophomores Alex Ghilea (management) and Andrew Harris (business) earned first team honors with a GPA of 3.20 or better. Senior Dane Webb (administrative leadership) and sophomore Jose Salazar (business) each earned second team honors.
“I'm very proud of these student-athletes' effort in the classroom,” head coach John Roddick said. “They have been very disciplined and it shows both on and off the court.”
Webb has now been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team in all three years in which he was eligible for the honor. The Richardson, Texas native was named to the first team in 2013 and 2014.
As sophomores, Ghilea, Harris and Salazar all make the team for the first time, as freshmen are not eligible in their first academic year. The honor is also the first for Papac.
In total, 23 Big 12 student-athletes received first team honors with another seven receiving second team honors.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
