Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays

March 25, 2015 | Track and Field
AUSTIN, Texas – A pair of Sooner newcomers, sophomore Thomas Cheval and freshman Payton Stumbaugh, have found the competition at the 88th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays to their liking after the first day of the multi-event competition.
Cheval has the lead after five events of the decathlon and Stumbaugh is third after four events of the heptathlon. A third Sooner, Makayla Stephens, is 15th in the heptathlon.
Cheval has a 54-point lead over Ingmar Vos, a 2012 Olympian who is competing unattached, and a 112-point lead over Harrison Williams of Stanford. Cheval closed day one with a total score of 4,104 points.
Cheval opened the 10-event competition with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.89, 885 points). That was followed by a second in the long jump (23-4.5, 842 points) and a ninth in the shot put (40-11.75, 636 points). He closed out the first day with second-place finishes in the high jump (6-9.75, 878 points) and the 400-meter dash (48.96, 863).
His second day of competition will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles. That's followed by the discus at 10:55 a.m., the pole vault at 1:05 p.m. and the javelin at 3:50 p.m. The final event of the competition, a grueling 1500-meter run, is set for 5:30 p.m.
Cheval competed for Cerritos College in 2014 and won the decathlon at the California Community College Athletic Association state meet with 7,175 points. Cheval posted five career bests in Wednesday's competition – 100-meter dash, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash and first day score.
Stumbaugh, who competed in the 2014 relays as a senior at Har-Ber (Ark.) High School, finished fifth in the 100-meter dash and third in the 100-meter hurdles a year ago.
Today, she opened her first collegiate heptathlon with a 13.76 in the 100-meter hurdles, good for fourth place in the race and 1,013 points. She then finished sixth in the high jump with a 5-6.50 and 842 points. She finished 10th in the shot put with a 37-1.75 in the shot put and 616 points. She closed her first day of competition by finishing second in the 200-meter dash with a 24.38. That time produced 945 points.
She finished the first day of her first collegiate heptathlon with 3,416 points, 341 points behind the leader.
Stephens, a freshman from Atoka, had a rough start, finishing 13th in the 100-meter hurdles. She followed that with an 11th-place finish in the high jump and was 15th in the shot put. She closed out her day with an 11th-place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Competition in the heptathlon will resume at 11 a.m. Thursday with the long jump. The javelin is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. and the event concludes with the 800-meter run at 2:15 p.m.
The multi-event student-athletes will be joined by several Sooner teammates on Thursday as the men's 4x800-meter relay and competitors in two other events, one on the track and one in the field, will compete.
Everette Favor and Tanner Williams are scheduled to compete in the B division of the pole vault at 3:45 p.m. while the relay, Allen Eke, Macolm Wankel, Jacob Goldberg and Zac Randall, will take to the track at 5:50 p.m. The final Sooner to compete on Thursday is Marissa Codispodi, who will run in the B division of the 1,500 at 7:10 p.m.
The meet continues through Saturday and the Sooners will have competitors through the final day.
Live results are available throughout the meet at Texas Relays. Additional information is available at the Texas Relays website.
