NORMAN – In the second meet of 2015 outdoor track and field season, the University of Oklahoma teams travel to Austin, Texas, for the 88th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, a meet that will mark many firsts in the 2015 outdoor season.
Competition begins Wednesday with the heptathlon and the decathlon events. Those continue through Thursday while other events begin to be the focus. The meet continues through Saturday with an emphasis on relays.
“This is our first opportunity to compete in outdoor only events, which gives us an opportunity to compete in the hammer,” Head Coach Jim VanHootegem said. “We had our first step into our outdoor season a week ago. Our outdoor season is underway so regardless of what meet we're going to it's the next step. The Texas Relays, a meet that's nationally known for big crowds, that's something special to our region of the country so we want to go there and do well.
“We're in the stage of the season where we're still getting stuff done. We are doing things we need to get done at this point in time of the year before we start to focus back on team competitions.”
This meet will also be a first for Oklahoma's multi-athletes as they make the transition into outdoor competition on Wednesday. The Texas Relays will be their first and only meet to compete in combined events before Big 12 competition in May.
VanHootegem calls it a unique situation and not just because this is their first and last time to compete before the Big 12.
“The women go from a one-day pentathlon to a two-day heptathlon,” VanHootegem explained. “You have to physically and emotionally get yourself ready for the next day.”
Three Sooners will compete in multi events including Makayla Stephens, Payton Stumbaugh and Thomas Cheval.
Steven Jazdyk, who normally competes in the multi events, will still be competing at the Texas Relays, but he will not be competing in the decathlon. He will compete in the 110-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash. He also is one of five who is listed in the 4x100 relay, joining Trae Armstrong, Mike Wells, Bennie Wesley and Daniel Brooks. The final quartet and race order will be determined the day of the race.
One event the Sooners do not normally compete in but will this weekend is the 4x800 relays for which the men's squad is sending Allen Eke, Malcolm Wankel, Jacob Goldberg, and Zac Randall to run. The quartet will also compete in the men's distance medley relay.
Other competitors for the men include Everette Favor and Tanner Williams in pole vault B division; Armstrong, Wells, and Wesley in the 100-meter dash; Chase Sammons in discus B division; Shonderius Howard and Garrison LeRock high jump B division and Carl Williams in the high jump A division.
Competitors for the women include Marissa Codispodi in the 1,500-meter run B division; Kate Foster and Jess Woodard in the discus B division; Avione Allgood and Woodard in shot put A division and Alex Morgan in the A flight of the discus. The women will enter the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, again with the final foursomes and order to be determined on race day. Leya Buchanan, Hannah Cunliffe, Erin Jones, Ama Pipi and Stumbaugh are listed for the 4x100 relay while Daye Shon Roberson, Mia Mukes, Daunicia Demerson, Payton Baker and Pipi are listed in the 4x400 relay.
Known nationally for drawing big crowds and outstanding competition, the Sooners are hoping for good performances and good weather to compete it.
“This meet is special in our region so we hope to do well this week,” VanHootgem said.
