NORMAN, Okla. – The 23rd-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team lost for just the third time this season Friday, dropping a 4-2 decision to the 54th-ranked Texas Longhorns inside the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion. The Sooners dropped to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 Conference play.

Texas gained the early advantage in doubles by surging late in matches that were tight for the majority of the time. At No. 1, junior Emma Devine and freshman Malene Stripp had a 3-3 tie before surrendering the final three points to the Longhorns Breaunna Addison and Dani Wagland. At No. 3, Christiana Brigante and Zita Engbroks fell to Ranika Batra and Pippa Horn 6-4 after gaining a 4-3 lead. The freshmen duo of Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi held a 5-3 lead over Ryann Foster and Lina Padegimatie before play was suspended due to the clinch at No. 2.

In singles, the Sooners got off to a fast start by winning five of the six first sets. Stripp got Oklahoma on the board with a dominating 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Lana Groenvyck to tie the match at 1-1. She is 3-0 this spring at No. 6.

“Malene just really rises to the occasion,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “She has proven that every time she has stepped on the court for us even though she hasn't had as many opportunities as she would have liked so far this year. “Every time she has had an opportunity she has taken full advantage of it.”

However, Texas would strike right back at No. 5 as Brigante fell to Padegimaite 6-3, 6-2. Brigante is now 9-4 overall in dual play.

Miyazaki raced out to a 5-0 first set lead at No. 1, before stopping a furious comeback from Ryann Foster to eventually win the set. She captured five straight points in the second set to erase a 3-1 deficit and defeated Foster 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match at 2-all. Miyazaki is now 11-2 at No. 1.

“Lily, from time to time, can have those let ups as well, but fortunately she usually builds a good enough lead,” said Mullins. “She definitely has the skill set to come back when she has let go of a lead like that.”

Texas eventually forced three matches to third sets with four strong second set wins. The Longhorns would take the first of these at No. 4. Engbroks won an intense 7-5 tiebreak in the first set, but eventually fell to Dani Wagland 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 and Texas pulled ahead 3-2.

“We have had an issue with that all year, whether it is getting leads in games or getting leads in sets,” said Mullins. “We let up and we're not recognizing that the players we are facing are too good and they are going to take full advantage of it.”

At No. 3, senior Abbi Melrose fell to Batra by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Texas clinched the match. Sethi was in a battle with Neda Koprcina after winning the first set at No. 2, with the score standing at 6-3, 2-6, 4-4 when the match concluded.
