PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Seven runs over the first three innings was enough for No. 4/3 Oklahoma (11-3) to secure a 7-3 win over No. 11/9 Kentucky (10-3) Saturday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Oklahoma, which entered the weekend with a nation's best four wins over ranked teams, improved to 5-3 on the year against top-25 teams and won its sixth game against the Wildcats in seven all-time meetings.
OU's quick start led to success for the team like it has done all season. The Sooners are now 9-0 in 2015 when scoring the first run of the game.
It all began with two runs in the first.
Freshman Nicole Pendley led off with hard line-drive single off the glove of Kentucky shortstop Christian Stokes. Kentucky starter Kelsey Nunley came back with a flyout and strikeout, but freshman Paige Parker opened the scoring by crushing an 0-1 pitch over the fence in right field. The monstrous two-run blast was the second of Parker's season.
The Sooners gave themselves an even bigger cushion thanks to a four-run second inning.
Junior Kady Self led off the inning by recording her first career triple as she lined the first pitch she saw to the right field corner. On the second pitch of the inning, fellow junior Whitney Ellis went back up the middle for an RBI single to make it 3-0 in OU's favor.
Senior Jessica Vest attempted to bunt Ellis with a sacrifice, but Nunley misplayed it and everyone was safe. Freshman Kelsey Arnold then laid down a sacrifice bunt of her own to move both runners into scoring position.
Pendley then batted again and hit another liner, this time off the glove of second baseman Ansley Smith. Ellis scored easily and Vest and Pendley both moved into scoring position when Smith's flip to first base was errant. The Sooners continued to pepper Smith at second as senior Lauren Chamberlain hit a hard grounder her way. Smith was in position but the ball got under her glove and ran all the way to the wall to bring in two runs to make 6-0.
OU picked up a seventh run in the third.
With two outs, Ellis was hit by a pitch. Vest followed with a walk, and the pair executed a double steal to move up to third and second, respectively. Arnold came to the plate and battled through an 11-pitch at-bat before hitting an RBI single beyond third base to score Ellis.
While the bats were hot, OU starter Kelsey Stevens did her part to keep the Kentucky bats in check.
She didn't give up a hit until Stokes led off the sixth inning with a home run to left field. Stevens finished with two runs allowed on just one hit with five walks and four strikeouts. She finished with 5.0 innings pitched and ran her record to 4-0 on the season.
Having already driven in two runs at the plate, Parker entered the game in the sixth as a relief pitcher. She allowed an inherited runner to score, and gave up a run of her own but helped stop the Kentucky rally at just three runs.
In the seventh, Parker put the exclamation mark on the win as she struck out the side to finish with four strikeouts.
