NORMAN -- Oklahoma men's tennis sophomore Alex Ghilea clinched the final two matches of the Sooners' run to their first ever National Indoor Championship and earned the Most Outstanding Player Award at the 2015 ITA National Indoor Championships.
This marks the first time in program history that a Sooners has taken home the MOP honor. Also a unanimous All-Tournament selection at No. 5 singles, Ghilea went 4-0 at the tournament and twice delivered the clinching point for OU. Against Baylor in the semifinals round, Ghilea trailed his opponent by a set and 2-5 in the second before running off 11 consecutive games to give OU a 4-2 win and a berth in the finals. The sophomore from Neamt, Romania is currently ranked No. 63 by the ITA and boasts a 7-0 record dual play.
Joining Ghilea on the All-Tournament team are junior Axel Alvarez and senior Dane Webb at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
Webb also went unbeaten in Chicago, winning three matches at No. 2 singles and going 2-0 in doubles with partner Alvarez. Webb was the first player off in three of the Sooners' matches and topped two top-30 opponents in straight sets. Webb's selection was unanimous.
Alvarez remained perfect in dual play by winning three matches during the tournament. All three of his wins came against top-70 ranked opponents. Alvarez leads the Sooners with 11 wins in singles this season and a 9-0 mark in dual play.
The trio went a combined 10-0 in singles during the tournament and in total won six matches over ranked opponents.
The Sooners are in action this evening when they take on No. 13 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. It will be OU's first outdoor match of the season. Oklahoma returns home Sunday to host No. 8 North Carolina at noon.
