Sooners Return Home for Tough Dual Slate

February 13, 2015 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. – The 36th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team returns to the Headington Family Tennis Center for the first time in 25 days when it takes on Wichita State University, Saturday, Feb. 14 and the University of Tulsa Sunday, Feb. 15. Both matches begin at noon.

The Sooners are coming off of a successful trip to Eugene, Ore., that resulted in two wins heading into their toughest task of the year thus far. Oklahoma is sandwiched between the two schools in this week's ITA rankings, with Wichita State coming in at No. 40, while Tulsa ranks No. 32, respectively.

“It is great to be on our home courts again and ultimately I am hoping that is the edge we need to get through this weekend successfully,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “I have no doubt we are up to the challenge and I look forward to seeing some great competition.”

Wichita State has been paced by junior Aleksandra Trifunovic. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native has compiled a 13-1 record combined in singles and doubles. The Sooners' second opponent, Tulsa, features the only ITA ranked player in action this weekend, Rongrong Leenabanchong, who is ranked at No. 100 in singles.

“All three teams are evenly matched this weekend so it may come down to how the matchups play out and even a bit of luck,” said Mullins. “On paper it is hard to see where anyone has a real advantage.”

Oklahoma continues to benefit from impressive play by its freshmen. In putting together a 14-4 combined record in singles, they are led by Lily Miyazaki. The Tokyo, Japan, native is 5-1 at the No. 1 singles position.
