NORMAN — In a narrow contest, the University of Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 20 Oregon State, 20-17, Sunday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners are now 6-7 overall this season, while the win moved the Beavers to a perfect 9-0 record. OU's four bout victories on the day came at 133 pounds, 165 pounds, 174 pounds and heavyweight.
At 133 pounds, No. 2 Cody Brewer topped Oregon State redshirt freshman Jack Hathaway by major decision, 14-5. The OU redshirt junior scored five total takedowns in the match as he improved to 12-1 this season, including 9-1 in duals.
The 165-pound matchup between OU redshirt sophomore Clark Glass and Oregon State junior Seth Thomas provided intensity as it entered the sudden victory period with the score knotted at 5 apiece after regulation. With just a couple of seconds remaining in the overtime frame, Glass recorded a takedown to win by decision, 7-5. The win was Glass' first over Thomas in three attempts this season.
No. 20 Matt Reed came out aggressive at 174 pounds, jumping to a 5-0 first period lead over Oregon State senior Joe Latham. The redshirt sophomore went on to win by 12-2 major decision, cutting the Beavers' advantage to 13-11.
In the dual's final match, No. 12 Ross Larson tallied his second fall in as many days, this time in 2:11 over Oregon State redshirt freshman Nate Keeve. Larson has 21 wins thus far in his redshirt sophomore campaign, 16 of which have come via pin.
“Ross Larson, I think the sky is the limit for him,” said Mark Cody, fourth-year OU head coach. “He's in attack mode every time he walks out there, and he's always not only trying to get a win, but he's trying to get a pin every time he goes out. If he doesn't pin guys he scores big points.”
Oregon State struck first as No. 14 Ronnie Bresser defeated OU freshman Ryan Millhof by decision, 6-1. At 141 pounds, OU freshman Trae Blackwell fell to redshirt freshman Devin Reynolds by a 3-1 decision.
At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Shayne Tucker dropped a close contest, falling to Oregon State redshirt freshman Abraham Rodriguez by a 4-3 decision on a last-second takedown. The Beavers then secured the win at 157 pounds as senior Alex Elder upset No. 11 Justin DeAngelis by major decision, 13-4.
No. 7 Taylor Meeks increased Oregon State's advantage with a 14-1 major decision of freshman Brooks Climmons at 184 pounds, and redshirt freshman Cody Crawford clinched the team victory for the Beavers with a 7-3 decision in the 197-pound match against freshman Andrew Dixon.
The Sooners are back in action on Friday, Feb. 6, as they welcome No. 18 Wyoming into McCasland Field House at 3 p.m. CT. OU then hosts No. 7 Oklahoma State in the second Bedlam battle of the season at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8. OU's seniors will be recognized at the contest.
Cody said that following the close losses this weekend, he will just tell his team to keep moving forward and that the next two matchups will come down to individual strategies.
“With those individual strategies, you have to stick to them to knock off one of these highly-ranked teams,” Cody explained. “We have to have a room full of guys who stick to their strategies and every guy has to do his job. If everybody does his job we can pull it off, but as an individual, we have to go out and take care of business. We have to do that next week.”
Tickets for both duals are available online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
