NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma wrestling team dropped a close 18-16 contest to No. 20 Wyoming Friday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners fell to 6-8 on the season, while the Cowboys moved to 8-3. OU recorded four bout victories in the dual at 133 pounds, 141 pounds, 157 pounds and heavyweight.
At 133 pounds, No. 2 Cody Brewer improved to 12-1 this season with an 8-3 decision of Wyoming's Drew Templeman. Brewer logged three takedowns in the bout and picked up the riding-time point with 2:51 total.
Freshman Trae Blackwell was aggressive at 141 pounds, defeating Cole Mendenhall in a 10-2 major decision. Blackwell collected three takedowns and two escapes in the match and earned 1:17 in riding time.
Tied at 0-0 after the first period, the 157-pound matchup between No. 15 Justin DeAngelis and Archie Colgan featured an active second period where DeAngelis picked up three takedowns. The redshirt senior went on to win the matchup 11-6 and now sits at 18-4 this season.
The dual's final match featured No. 11 Ross Larson and Wyoming's Tanner Harms. Larson picked up his 17th win by fall this season, pinning Harms in 4:11. The redshirt sophomore holds a 22-4 mark on the season.
Wyoming scored first in the 125-pound bout as No. 15 Tyler Cox defeated Ryan Millhof in a 4-3 decision. Shayne Tucker fell to Wyoming's Austin Breckenridge at 149-pounds in a narrow 7-6 decision.
At 165 pounds. No. 20 Dakota Friesth defeated OU's Clark Glass in a 6-2 decision. No. 14 Andy McCulley took back Wyoming's lead in the 174-pound match when he defeated No. 18 Matt Reed in a 7-3 decision.
Freshman Brooks Climmons fell in a 3-0 decision to No. 19 Benjamin Stroh at 184 pounds, and at 197 pounds, No. 18 Shane Woods clinched the victory for Wyoming in a 4-0 decision of OU freshman Andrew Dixon.
Fourth-year OU head coach Mark Cody said his team has to find its confidence moving forward into the closing stretch of the season.
“I just think that somehow with these guys we just have to make sure that we get them to be less fearful when they walk out there and try to squeeze any anxiety out of them,” Cody explained. “They are a hardworking bunch of guys. When I watch them work in here (the wrestling room), the outcomes of what has been happening here, particularly today, it's shocking to me… This sport is 99 percent mental and you really have to believe that you're going to win and go out and fight like you're going to win.”
The Sooners return to the mat at 2 p.m. CT this Sunday, Feb. 8, when they welcome in-state rival Oklahoma State for the last home contest of the season. OU's seniors will be recognized prior to the Bedlam contest. Tickets for the dual are available online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
