NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team won each of its three dual matches this weekend at the Wildcat Fall Duals at Northwestern University in Chicago.
The Sooners posted a combined 5-4 record in doubles and a season-best 13-5 mark in singles across all three match-ups.
Oklahoma head coach Dave Mullins was thrilled with the successful weekend.
“I saw some really big improvements out there across the board and I think we have learned some important lessons," he said.
Sophomore Lily Miyazaki was named the tournament MVP. Miyazaki was undefeated in doubles, pairing with fellow sophomore Malene Stripp for a 7-5 win over DePaul's Tesic/Fischer. For the second and third duals, Miyazaki and redshirt junior Mimi Fotopoulos beat Erin Larner and Jillian Rooney of Northwestern 6-2 and Yale's Tina Jiang and Valerie Shklover 6-2.
Miyazaki also finished the weekend undefeated in singles. Her first two wins came in straight sets, beating Yuliva Shupenia of DePaul (6-2, 6-3) and Northwestern's Maddie Lipp (6-4, 6-2). Her final victory came with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Yale's Jiang.
On Friday, the Sooners dropped just one singles match and one doubles match to DePaul, going 2-1 in doubles and 5-1 in singles.
OU faced host school Northwestern Saturday, again posting a 2-1 record in doubles and clinched the win with four singles victories against the Wildcats.
Yale bested Oklahoma in doubles on Sunday, 2-1, but the Sooners snagged singles, 4-2, for the victory.
Stripp also posted a perfect singles record for the weekend, capping it with a straight-set win of Yale's Shklover, 6-2, 7-5.
Sophomore Christie Brigante was 2-1 in both singles and doubles, finishing her weekend with a straight-set singles win over Yale's Caroline Lynch, 6-2, 7-6.
Sophomore Simran Sethi's straight-set victory, 7-5, 7-5, over Northwestern's Rooney helped secure a Saturday win for the Sooners.
Senior Emma Devine teamed up with Brigante to serve up the first win of the weekend, a 6-4 victory over DePaul's Patricia Lancranjan and Rebeca Mitrea.
“I could not be happier with how we competed this weekend. We got a lot out of every match and we absolutely got better from all the competitive matches we were a part of in singles and doubles,” Mullins said.
