Ghilea Splits at All-American Championships

October 09, 2015 | Men's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma men's tennis player Alex Ghilea wrapped up his run at the 2015 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., with split results in the main singles draw.

Ghilea, ranked No. 50 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, earned an automatic bid to the main singles draw. In the first round Ghilea bested Robert Kelly of North Carolina in straight sets 7-5, 7-5. Kelly had earned his spot in the main draw through the qualifying draw.

In the second round, Ghilea drew Benjamin Lock of Florida State. Lock took the first set 6-1 but Ghilea would rally to grab the second frame by the same score. In the decisive third set, Ghilea fell 5-7.

The Sooners last saw Lock during the spring 2015 season when the Seminoles traveled to Norman for a dual match. Senior Axel Alvarez bested Lock in straight sets to help lift the Sooners to a 4-0 sweep. After the weekend's matches, Ghilea moves to 3-2 in singles this fall.

The Sooners will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the ITA Central Region Championships. Alvarez, ranked No. 1 nationally, will look to make it back-to-back-to-back titles at the regional championships. The reigning national and Big 12 Player of the Year won the singles title in 2013 and 2014.
