WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The second-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team picked up its first road win of the year with a 5-2 win over No. 19 Wake Forest at the Wake Forest Tennis Center Friday night. The Sooners move to 4-0 on the year including two wins over top-30 teams.
“We played a very solid match tonight against Wake,” head coach John Roddick said. “Dane really took care of business and Axel [Alvarez] and Alex [Ghilea] did a nice job as well. We are getting better, and we need to keep working hard.”
Oklahoma came out swinging, taking the doubles point for the third time this season. Sophomore Andrew Harris and freshman Spencer Papa grabbed the first win of the match for the Sooners. The duo topped Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri 6-4. Harris and Papa are now 2-1 in the No. 2 spot for the year.
At No. 1 doubles the 38th-ranked duo of senior Dane Webb and junior Axel Alvarez clinched the point for OU. The duo topped Jon Ho and Noah Rubin 7-5 to remain undefeated and run their record to 7-0 for the season.
The Sooners grabbed their first point in singles in the No. 3 spot. Webb, currently ranked No. 33, made quick work of Mansouri and took the match 6-0, 6-2 to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead. Webb is now 3-0 in dual play, all at the No. 3 spot.
Playing in the No. 6 spot but facing the Demon Deacons' third highest ranked player, sophomore Alex Ghilea, ranked No. 50, grabbed another straight-sets win for the Sooners. Ghilea took down No. 102 Maksim Kan 6-1, 6-2 to put OU up 3-0.
The clinching point came on court one where Harris, ranked No. 20, topped Noah Rubin 6-3, 6-3 to claim his third win of the year at No. 1 singles.
“Harris was tremendous at No. 1 singles against Rubin,” Roddick said. “He executed his game plan perfectly and competed great at the same time.”
Play continued in the remaining matches. At No. 2 singles, Alvarez, ranked No. 14, picked up a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 win over No. 12 Romain Bogaerts. Alvarez had previously faced Bogaerts in the second round of the ITA All-American Championship in the fall where he narrowly dropped a three-set, marathon that saw tiebreaks in sets two and three. Alvarez is now 4-0 in dual play and has two wins over top-12 opponents.
Playing in the No. 4 spot, Papa fell to No. 52 Ho, the Demon Deacons' second highest ranked player. Papa, a freshman, took the first set 6-2 and forced a tiebreak in the second frame but fell 6-7. Papac dropped the match tiebreak to fall 6-2, 6-7, 0-1.
Jose Salazar was the last Sooner to finish. The sophomore took set one 6-4, but suffered the same fate as Papa, losing a second set tiebreak and the match tiebreak to fall 6-4, 6-7, 0-1.
The Sooners will be back in action next weekend as they return to the friendly confines of the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU will face No. 21 South Florida Friday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. and then square off with Alabama Sunday, Feb. 8 at noon.
