WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The second-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team travels to North Carolina for a top-20 showdown with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
ROAD TEST
This will be the first true road test of the year for head coach John Roddick's bunch. The Sooners have played three home duals so far. Last year the Sooners went 7-1 during the regular season in true road matches.
SOONERS RANKED
The Sooners (3-0) remain in the No. 2 spot after a pair of wins in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Additionally, four Sooners find themselves ranked inside the top-50 of the ITA's singles rankings. Oklahoma and Virginia are the only schools in the country to have four players ranked in the top-50. Junior Axel Alvarez is the highest ranked Sooner at No. 14, sophomore Andrew Harris comes in at No. 20, senior Dane Webb makes the list at No. 33 and sophomore Alex Ghilea sits at No. 50. The doubles duo of Alvarez and Webb also made the ITA doubles rankings at No. 38.
SCOUTING THE DEACONS
Wake Forest is ranked 19th in the latest ITA poll, down one notch from the 18 spot it occupied in the previous rankings. Wake Forest is 3-1 on the year, with their lone loss coming to 12th-ranked Duke on the first day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by the Blue Devils. On the second day of the Kick-Off Weekend, the Demon Deacons topped then 22nd-ranked Clemson.
The Wake Forest roster features three players ranked in latest ITA singles rankings. Romain Bogaerts will be the highest ranked player at the dual, as the junior from Belgium currently sits at No. 13. The Sooners last saw Bogaerts in the fall when he faced Alvarez in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships. Bogaerts narrowly bested Alvarez 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the second round of play. Bogaerts went on to advance to the semifinals round of the 64-player draw.
The Sooners also had a run in with 52nd-ranked Jonathan Ho of Wake Forest at the All-American Championships. Webb topped the junior from Pennsylvania in the second round of the consolation draw in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Maksim Kan, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Ohio, is the third and final Demon Deacon in the ranks. Kan is currently ranked No. 102. Wake Forest does not currently have a doubles team ranked.
DOMINANT DUO
One reason for the Sooners' hot start is the play of Alvarez and Webb. As a doubles team the duo is an undefeated 5-0 including 3-0 in dual play. The pair is just a strong in singles. Alvarez is 5-1 on the year and 3-0 in dual play at the No. 2 spot. Webb's play has been similarly strong. The senior is 2-0 in dual play at the No. 3 spot including a momentum shifting, comeback win that propelled the Sooners to a win over No. 28 Northwestern.
YOUNG CONTRIBUTER
Oklahoma has also been strong in the back of the order. Playing at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, sophomore Jose Salazar has scored a point for OU in all three of the Sooners' dual matches and is off to a 5-1 start. The Spaniard is seeing his first spring season action as a Sooner.
LAST TIME OUT
Oklahoma is fresh off a pair of wins at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Sooners swept No. 56 New Mexico 4-0 on the first day of play, and then bested No. 28 Northwestern on day two. The Sooners dropped the doubles point to Northwestern but battled back to win all four of the singles matches that were finished to claim a 4-1 win.
Oklahoma will be one of 16 teams to take part in the 2015 ITA National Indoor Championships played Feb. 13-16 in Chicago at the Midtown Athletic Club. This marks the third consecutive year the Sooners will be in the field. Last year, Oklahoma topped No. 22 Illinois in the first round of play before falling to No. 2 UCLA in the second round.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Sooners will be back in the friendly confines of the Headington Family Tennis Center and the Gregg Wadley Indoor Pavilion next weekend. Oklahoma faces No. 21 South Florida Friday Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. and then squares off with No. 44 Alabama Sunday Jan. 8 at noon. Admission is free for all home matches.
