We were smart, disciplined and aggressive when we needed to be and executed well
Head Coach John Roddick
NORMAN – The No. 2 ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team opened its 2015 season Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over Wichita State on Tuesday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners won both doubles matches that were completed and a total of five singles matches, dropping only two sets in the process.
“We played well,” head coach John Roddick said. “I was happy that we served out 5-4 games on three courts in the second sets. The guys were really disciplined today. When they got leads they kept them. I think we only gave them one break back in all the second sets combined. We were smart, disciplined and aggressive when we needed to be and executed well.”
The Sooners took the first win in the match with a dominant performance from Florin Bragusi and Alex Ghilea at No. 3 doubles. The pair of sophomores beat Sergio and Guillermo DeVilchez, 6-1.
The 38th-ranked duo of junior Axel Alvarez and senior Dane Webb clinched the doubles point for Oklahoma. The pair continued their red-hot play by taking down the 17th-ranked pair of Tin Ostojic and Tomislav Gregurovic. Alvarez and Webb trailed 4-3 at one point before winning the next three games to take the match 6-4. Sophomore Andrew Harris and freshman Spencer Papa led their match with Jocelyn Devilliers and Miroslav Herzan 6-5 at the time and did not finish. Alvarez and Webb move to 4-0 as a pair for the spring.
In singles, Ghilea, ranked 50th in the nation, was first to finish. Playing in the number four position, the sophomore topped Herzan in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to give Oklahoma a 2-0 lead.
No. 33 Dane Webb gave the Sooners their third point of the night with a straight sets victory over Guillermo de Vilchez in the number three position.
Oklahoma then picked up an avalanche of points to take the lead 6-0. The clinching point came from 14th-ranked Alvarez. The junior bested Gregurovic 6-3, 6-4 at number two singles. Almost immediately after the conclusion of Alvarez's match, Bragusi finished off Sergio de Vilchez 6-2, 6-4 at number six singles, and sophomore Jose Salazar topped Devilliers 6-4, 6-4 in the number five spot.
With Oklahoma already having clinched the match, Harris was still locked in a battle with No. 114 Ostojic. The 20th-ranked Aussie trailed in set three 1-5 and pushed Ostojic to 3-5 by virtue of a break, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-2, 3-6. Harris is fresh off a successful run through Australia where he played in the ATP Happy Valley Challenger and the qualifying draw at the Australian Open. Harris won seven total matches in his home country including four against players currently ranked in the world top-200.
“Ideally we weren't going to play him today,” Roddick said. “He just got back (from Australia) and he has played a ton of matches. He played well today. At times he could have been sharper, but he hit the ball really well. I was really happy with what he did considering the position we put him in.”
Oklahoma is back in action Jan. 24-25 when it hosts the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU will be joined by No. 28 Northwestern, No. 56 Arkansas and No. 58 New Mexico for the two day event. Each team is guaranteed two matches and the team that wins both its matches will qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships in Chicago, Feb. 13-16.
As the first home match of the season, today's match gave the Sooners a chance to get used to the home courts.
“We play at home this weekend so it's nice to play here tonight,” Roddick said. “That's the biggest benefit of this match. We play indoors exactly where we will be playing this weekend.”
