TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma men's tennis team began play in the qualifying doubles draw of the ITA All-American Championships Tuesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.

Junior Axel Alvarez and senior Dane Webb paired for the Sooners and picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win in the first round over Daniel Alameh and Marlon Brand from Pacific. The duo now will face Ace Matias and Denys Pume of UNLV Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the second round.

The qualifying doubles draw features 128 doubles teams, from which 16 will earn a place in the main doubles draw. Alvarez and Webb will need to win two more matches to earn a place in the main doubles draw.

Alvarez and Webb paired five times for Oklahoma during the 2014 spring season, compiling a 3-2 record at No. 1 doubles.

Sophomore Alex Ghilea and redshirt senior Nick Papac also competed on Tuesday. The pair was eliminated though when they dropped their afternoon match with Alejandro Augusto and Hunter Harrington of Clemson, 5-7, 6-7.

Ghilea also saw action in the qualifying singles draw on Tuesday, dropping a tightly contested match to Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame, 6-7, 6-7.

Ghilea had advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw by virtue of three wins in the pre-qualifying draw and a win in the first round of the qualifying draw Monday.

Three Sooners still remain in contention in the singles portion of the prestigious championship. Alvarez, Webb and sophomore Andrew Harris were all pre-selected for the main draw, slated to being Thursday, Oct. 2.
